HISTORY:

The Diocese of Kotido was created on May 20th 1991, being detached from Moroto Diocese which formerly covered the whole of Karamoja Region. It now comprises the Districts of Kotido, Kaabong, and Abim, bordering Southern Sudan in the North, Moroto District in the South, Turkana Region of Kenya in the East, and Lira and Pader Districts in the West.

The first Comboni Missionaries arrived in Karamoja in 1933.  Eventually the area became part of the former Apostolic Prefecture of Gulu, entrusted to the Comboni Missionaries under the leadership of the Mgr. Antonio Vignato mccj.  The Diocese of  Moroto was set up in 1965, again entrusted to the Comboni Missionaries, headed by Rt.Rev.Sisto Mazzoldi mccj. In 1981, Rt.Rev.Paul Kalanda succeeded Rt.Rev.Sisto Mazzoldi mccj, and in 1991 Kotido Diocese was established, with Rt.Rev.Denis Lote Kiwanuka as its first residential Bishop.
Upon the elevation of Rt.Rev. Denis Lote Kiwanuka to the metropolitan Archdiocese of Tororo as its Archbishop, Rev.Fr.Bernard Charles Phelan, ]mhm] was elected Diocesan Administrator  on September 18th 2007.

Bishop Giuseppe Filippi

The Rt. Rev. Giuseppe Filippi was born in Balsega del Bondone, Archdiocese of Trento, Italy, on 17th March 1945. He was ordained a priest on 26th June 1978 as a member of the Comboni Missionaries. On 17th August 2009, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop of Kotido and ordained Bishop on 19th December 2009 at Kotido.

 

 

 

The Most Reverend Archbishop Denis Kiwanuka Lote

His Grace Kiwanuka Lote was born on 25th March 1938 at Pallisa. He was ordained a priest on 19th Dec. 1965 in Tororo. Elected First Bishop Kotido on 8th June 1991, he was consecrated a Bishop on 19th August 1991. On 27th of June 2007, the Holy Father appointed Bishop Denis Lote Kiwanuka, the Second Metropolitan Archbishop of Tororo.
