HISTORY

Arua Diocese was cut off from Gulu Diocese and erected as a diocese on 23rd June 1958. Its patrons are Sacred Heart of Jesus and our Lady Mediatrix of all Graces. The Diocese of Arua has three Vicariates, namely, Ediofe, Lodonga and Moyo.

The first Bishop of Arua Diocese from 1958 to 1984 was Rt. Rev. Angelo Tarantino of the Comboni Missionaries. The second Bishop of Arua Diocese was the Rt. Rev. Frederick Drandua. He led the Diocese from 1984 to 1986 as a Diocesan Administrator and from 1986 to 2009 as the Bishop Ordinary of Arua Diocese. The third Bishop of Arua Diocese is the Rt. Rev. Sabino Ocan Odoki who came to Arua Diocese as an Apostolic Administrator from August 2009. He was then confirmed as Bishop of Arua Diocese on 20th October 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. His Lordship is the Bishop Ordinary of Arua Diocese up to date.

The Right Reverend Bishop Sabino Ocan Odoki

The Rt. Rev. Sabino Ocan Odoki was born at Layibi, Gulu Archdiocese on 8th August 1957. He was ordained a priest on 10th September1983 in Gulu Cathedral. On 22nd July 2006 His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI elected him Auxiliary Bishop of Gulu Archdiocese. Then on 21st October 2006 he was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Gulu by His Grace John Baptist Odama assisted by His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala and the Apostolic Nuncio in Uganda His Excellency Christophe Pierre. On 19th August 2009 Bishop Sabino was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI the Apostolic Administrator of Arua Diocese. And on the 20th October 2010, Bishop Sabino was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI Bishop of Arua Diocese. He was then installed as Bishop Ordinary of Arua Diocese on 18th December 2010 in Ediofe Cathedral.

(RIP) The Rt. Rev. Frederick Drandua

The Rt. Rev. Frederick Drandua (RIP), was born in Uleppi Parish on 12th August 1943 died on 1st September 2016, was ordained a priest on 9th August 1970. He was appointed Bishop of Arua Diocese on 27th May 1986. Consecrated Bishop of Arua on 15th August 1986. Due to health condition Bishop Frederick retired from the Episcopal See of Arua Diocese on 19th August 2009.
